Spider-Man” producer Laura Ziskin dies of cancer

Laura ZiskinLaura Ziskin, the Hollywood producer who helped turn “Pretty Woman” heroine Julia Roberts into a star and brought “Spider-Man” to the big screen, died on Sunday after a public battle with breast cancer. She was 61.

According to a statement from Sony Pictures, where her production company was based, Ziskin died at her Los Angeles home after fighting the disease for seven years.

In 2008 Ziskin, along with other entertainment notables including newswoman Katie Couric, co-founded Stand Up To Cancer, an advocacy group for cancer research. Later that year — and again last September — Ziskin produced all-star telethons that aired live on the major U.S. networks.

In addition to making movies, Ziskin also produced the Academy Awards broadcast twice, and served as president of Fox 2000 Pictures, a feature film division of 20th Century Fox.

She was perhaps best known for producing the three “Spider-Man” movies starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. The trilogy grossed $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office. The franchise is currently being overhauled with a new cast and a focus on the superhero’s early years.

Among the films Ziskin championed at Fox 2000 was the searingly brutal drama “Fight Club,” starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. Following an advance screening that left other studio executives bewildered and angry, Ziskin boldly proclaimed it was brilliant, according to author Sharon Waxman’s “Rebels on the Backlot.”

Still she did blanch at one comical line — “I want to have your abortion — and begged director David Fincher to replace it. He reluctantly agreed, but the new line was even more grotesque and she begged him to revert to the old line. He refused, according to the book.

Ziskin, a Los Angeles native who started out as a personal assistant, started making features in the mid-1980s. She teamed with actress Sally Field to produce “Murphy’s Romance,” a 1985 comedy-drama for which James Garner received an Oscar nomination.

She hired hot young stars Kevin Costner for “No Way Out” (1987) and Dennis Quaid for “D.O.A.” (1988), and helped transform Roberts into Hollywood’s biggest sensation with “Pretty Woman,” the 1990 smash which she executive produced.

Richest and Poorest Super-Heroes

All Super HeroesI was just thinking about this the other day and it got me wondering, who is more richer, Batman [bruce wayne] or Ironman [tony stark], then it got me thinking about other superheroes I’ve watched or have known.

Coming down to the conclusion, in my own opinion, i would say Batman is richer than Ironman, this because he spends his money on mostly gadget and new toys, you can say he spends it more wisely, whereas Ironman spends his own money on mainly enjoying the spoils of Life or just lavishing his wealth; to me this is how i see it.

Then i got thinking of other superheroes like Superman, Spiderman and finally it struck me. The Hulk, he isn’t so much heard off and come to think of it. He keeps wandering from State to State doing nothing but going on saying “Hulk Smash, Hulk Bash”…

One of the craziest things i thought of was that, he always find it difficult keeping his clothes, thus anytime he goes Hulk mode, he has to get new clothes and he’s so broke to even get money that he can’t even keep his wardrobe intact. I thought of other heroes like Wolverine and how independent he is, never-the-less he’s still living in a more or less home like an asylum center for Mutants. The green lantern can have any family so he just drifts away every time, Flash is just OK, not that he has anything, this goes the same for superman and spiderman.

Even thinking about Spider-man, he ain’t doing well on his part and he’s so scared talking to girls which makes the Black suit spider-man better in a way than the red suit. The Fantastic Four are just plain middle class folks but they too strive just to be heard.

In all, you gotta hand it to the Rich super Heroes, after-all with their money they even got cooler powers than the natural heroes who were accidentally struck with one phenomenon or the other to have extra ordinary power.

E3 2011: Call of Duty Elite Subscription Will Be a ‘Slam Dunk’ for Gamers, says Activision

Call of Duty EliteCall of Duty: Elite was met with some skepticism by some, but having witnessed a presentation during E3 of the feature set being offered to fans of the popular shooter franchise, we can say that it provides a fantastic way to connect with like-minded gamers, track your stats in numerous ways, and get your hands on all the DLC Activision has in the works.

That last point could be the most attractive one for avid Call of Duty gamers. If you subscribe to the new Elite service, which will offer plenty for free by the way, you’ll automatically get all the DLC. Activision’s Beachhead studio product director Noah Heller described the service as a great value; he said, “You’ll do the math and it’ll be a slam dunk.”

Activision has yet to disclose what exactly will come with the paid subscription, but that’s expected to be revealed in the coming months this summer as they unveil even more about Modern Warfare 3, which is intricately tied to Elite. Analysts have speculated that an annual subscription for Elite could be around $50-$60. If that’s the case and the typical Call of Duty DLC is $15, then we could definitely see how the math works out as a good thing for Elite, as Heller was alluding to.

Anonymous MemberRecent arrests in Barcelona, Alicante and Almeria are said to involve three suspected members of Anonymous. The Spanish police believe the gentlemen formed a key cell of the organization and investigators think the group was behind the attacks on Sony’s PlayStation Network as well as Spain’s Central Electoral Board.

None of the suspects have been named yet, but the Spanish police has posted IRC logs showing the gentlemen planning to attack the Electoral Board. A server hosted in Gijon, Spain was also seized in the arrest.

This is only the beginning as Anonymous and hackers in general are not just a problem you can shut down with a single arrest.

PlayStation Network Data Loss: Sony ‘May Never Know’ Full Details

Sony HackedSpeaking with BBC Click, Sony executive Kaz Hirai admitted that the company “may never know” the full extent of what was stolen in the PlayStation Network security breach. He said the company knows “information was accessed”, but Sony could not be sure “what part [was] actually taken.”

“The people that intruded our systems are very good in hiding their tracks as they left our systems, so we might not know for a very long time or we may never know,” he said.

Hirai reiterated that Sony did not know if any credit card data was taken. He called the issue of hackers much larger than just Sony and said that the company has learned much about security from the debacle.

“It’s certainly not just a Sony issue, but more of a corporate issue for everybody. As you probably know, even in this past week or so there have been other organizations and companies where a similar sort of intrusion has occurred,” he added.

“Whether we’re talking about a large corporation like Sony as well as smaller organizations, whoever deals with personal information as well as credit card information needs to be very vigilant about how that data is being secured.”

Kung Fu Panda 2

Kung Fu Panda 2From the studio that brought you “Shrek,” “Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda.” Po is now living his dream as The Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, The Furious Five – Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey. But Po’s awesome new life is threatened by the emergence of a formidable villain, who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu. It is up to Po and The Furious Five to journey across China to face this threat and vanquish it. But how can Po stop a weapon that can stop kung fu? He must look to his past and uncover the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will he be able to unlock the strength he needs to succeed.

Long ago, Lord Shen (Gary Oldman), heir of the peacock clan that ruled Gongmen City in China, sought to harness the power of fireworks as a weapon with which to rule the entire country. When he learned from the court’s goat soothsayer (Michelle Yeoh) that “a warrior of black and white” would one day defeat him, Shen assumed she was referring to the giant pandas and had them exterminated to avert the prophecy. Shen’s parents were horrified at this atrocity and exiled Shen, who swore revenge.

Thirty years later, Po (Jack Black) is living his dream as the Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, the Furious Five, but is told by Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) that he has yet to achieve inner peace. While fighting off a pack of wolf bandits who have been stealing refined metal for Lord Shen, Po is distracted by a symbol on the head wolf’s (Danny McBride) armor, which causes Po to have a flashback of his mother and allows the wolves to escape. Po asks his goose father, Mr. Ping (James Hong), where he came from, but all Ping can tell him is that he found Po as an infant in a radish crate and adopted him.

Afterward, Shifu receives word that Master Thundering Rhino (Victor Garber), leader of the kung fu council protecting Gongmen City, has been killed by Lord Shen with his newly developed weapon, a cannon, which threatens to destroy kung fu tradition. Po and the Five go to stop him, reaching Gongmen City to find it under the control of Shen’s forces. The heroes find two imprisoned council members, Masters Storming Ox (Dennis Haysbert) and Croc (Jean-Claude Van Damme), and ask their help to liberate the city, but both masters cite their helplessness against Shen’s weapon and refuse to escape. Po and the Five are then discovered by the wolf leader, who they chase to prevent him from alerting Shen, only to be captured.

Upon being brought before Shen in his tower, Po and the Five free themselves and destroy Shen’s cannon. However, Crane burns his wing and Po is again distracted by a flashback upon seeing the same symbol as before on Shen’s plumage, allowing Shen to escape and destroy the tower with an arsenal of cannons. After escaping, Tigress (Angelina Jolie) confronts Po over his distraction. Po explains that he remembers Shen’s presence on the night he was separated from his parents, and wants to question Shen about his past. Though empathetic, Tigress orders him to stay behind for his own safety. Po regardless breaks into Shen’s cannon factory to confront Shen, inadvertently foiling the Five’s attempts to destroy the factory. Shen claims that Po’s parents abandoned him before he blasts Po out of the factory and captures the Five.

Po is rescued by Shen’s soothsayer, who has been exiled by Shen to the ruined village where Po was born. Guided by the soothsayer to embrace his past, Po remembers that his parents had endangered themselves to save him from Shen’s forces, his mother hiding him in a crate before she was subdued. Attaining inner peace, Po returns to Gongmen City to save the captive Five from being executed by Shen at the city harbor. During the ensuing battle (in which Shifu participates after having persuaded Ox and Croc to do the same), Po uses his inner peace to gauge Shen’s cannon fire and redirect it against Shen’s armada. He then urges Shen to let go of his own past, but Shen refuses and attacks Po until Shen inadvertently slashes the ropes holding up his last cannon, which falls and crushes him to death. Victorious, Po returns to the Valley of Peace and reunites with Mr. Ping, declaring him to be his father. At the same time, Po’s biological father (Fred Tatasciore) is shown to be alive in a hidden village inhabited by surviving pandas, sensing that his son is also alive.
