Battlefield 3 Sells 5 Million in First Week

Battlefield 3 had a very solid first week, despite some of the lingering online problems ongoing with Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game. EA has announced that over 5 million units have been sold worldwide since release on Tuesday. Last week, the company had announced 10 million copies shipped.

“From Tokyo to Los Angeles, Sydney to London, millions of fans have been playing all weekend long — we are overwhelmed by the global response to Battlefield 3,” said Patrick Soderlund, executive vice president of the EA Games Label.

“It is extremely gratifying to deliver an entertainment experience that delights our fans, and to have the opportunity to introduce new people to the franchise. Already, we are seeing unprecedented play times and online activity which is very rewarding. This launch solidifies Battlefield as a leading entertainment brand.”

Other notable achievements in social media have been confirmed as well, with over 2.5 million ‘Likes’ on the Facebook page, and over 200K followers on Twitter.

An Epic proportion in Gaming destruction, topple buildings, shoot with realistic weapons, Gun fire sounds realistic, this games is just off the chart. Wonder how Call of Duty: MW3 is going to be.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

A female ape, designated No. 9 (aka “Bright Eyes” by the staff), has been given the drug ALZ 112, and has shown considerable progress. She is more sociable and calmer than normal apes, and has succeeded in completing the Towers of Hanoi puzzle in 20 moves, which is close to a perfect score of 15. Will Rodman (Franco) talks to his boss, Steve Jacobs (Oyelowo), and convinces him that he has data to enable them to proceed with human trials for the drug.

The next day, Rodman and Jacobs appear before the board at Gen-Sys’ conference room. Will explains that the new drug causes neurogenesis, which allows the brain to grow new brain cells (something that doesn’t happen after birth) and heal any number of degenerative brain disorders, such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. The only side effect is that the subjects exposed to the drug have a green sparkle to the eyes.

Back in the lab, the senior ape caretaker named Robert Franklin (Labine) is having trouble coaxing Bright Eyes out of her cage, acting aggressively towards Robert and the other helpers. They attempt to lure her out of the cage with orange soda, but when they try to wrangle her with a lasso pole, she goes “ape,” and runs rampant through the building. The chase ends when she crashes through the glass window of the conference room, and the building’s security guards kill her.

Fearing that what they witnessed with Bright Eyes is a violent side effect of the drug, Jacobs pronounces the drug project ‘dead.’ Will attempts to change his mind, but Jacobs refuses, claiming he wants the remainder of the test apes ‘put down.’

After returning to the lab, Robert shows Will a baby ape hidden in Bright Eyes cell. This explains that their assumption was in error: Bright Eyes was not acting violently because of the drug, but to protect her child. Robert does not have the heart to put down the baby, and gives the task to Will. Unwilling to do this, he decies to take the baby home.

Will returns home, where he lives with his father, Charles (John Lithgow). Charles is currently suffering from Alzheimers, and needs care from a nurse when Will is not around. Will shows the baby ape to Charles, who soon takes a liking to it. Charles playfully calls the baby Caesar (implied from his love of the Shakespeare play).

Caesar soon begins to show incredible progress, able to feed himself after only 2 days, and the temporary caring for him soon pushes on to 3 years, with Will setting up a room for him in the attic his home. Though apelike in some areas, Caesar also has become domesticated. He can communicate through sign-language, and communicate complex ideas and statements.

Modern Warfare 3 Domain Now in Activision’s Hands

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3Many gamers might remember a time when modernwarfare3.com simply took a redirect to the Battlefield 3 website. Understandably, Activision was not amused and sought to right this wrong. Today, a panel from the National Arbitration Forum has granted control of the domain to Activision.

The trouble began back in late 2009, when Anthony Abraham registered the domain as an unofficial fan site for the as-of-yet unreleased title. By the time Activision found out about the site, Abraham quickly changed his tone from support to downright anger, feeling threatened by ATVI’s lawyers.

Starting with an onslaught of insults, coupled with video tirades and anti-Call of Duty slogans, the controversy surrounding the domain exploded when gamers found the domain simply redirected to Battlefield 3’s main site. EA was quick to point out that they had nothing to do with the matter.

The escapades have come to an end today, as Activision has unsurprisingly regained control of the domain, citing the required elements from the ICANN policy. Activision was able to prove that the ‘fan site’ was “confusingly similar” to the Call of Duty trademark. It was also able to show that Abraham had “no rights or interests for the domain, and that the website had been created ‘in bad faith’ on Abraham’s part.”

EA Mudslinging Towards Call of Duty ‘A Smart Move’

EA is super serious about taking back the shooter category. The company is not likely to top rival Activision and the massively popular Call of Duty brand this year, but it does believe it can take significant share with Battlefield 3. Part of the strategy would appear to involve some trash talking of the competition, but many gamers are starting to frown upon EA’s tactics. Is mudslinging a good idea or does it simply make EA look petty and unprofessional?

It began with EA boss John Riccitiello telling IndustryGamers that he’d like Call of Duty to “rot from the core.” Then, at Gamescom, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg took the high road, saying that wishing for the demise of a competitor is simply bad for the industry, and he’d like to see all games succeed. EA then responded by “welcoming” Hirshberg to the industry and warning him that Call of Duty could be dead in a few years.

“What such smack-talk does do is galvanize attention around the coming showdown: A win-win for both sides from the perspective of pure publicity.”

Marketing expert Scott Steinberg of TechSavvy Global sees the EA approach as a “clever ploy” to garner attention. “It reflects just how seriously Electronic Arts and Activision take the coming clash of the titans – and how much each side has invested in the conflict’s outcome. Modern Warfare 3 enjoys tremendous brand recognition and a massive fan following, giving it a marked advantage over Battlefield 3 at the cash register… but Battlefield 3 may very well be the more ambitious, polished and critically-acclaimed of the two titles,” he told us. “Moreover, each side plans to spend well into the eight or nine figures promoting the titles, reinforcing just how high the stakes are they’re playing for.”

Wedbush Securities’ Michael Pachter noted that EA may look bad, but in the end, it’s good to grab attention. “Smart move, AND petty and unprofessional,” he remarked. Pachter also added that Activision isn’t exactly innocent in this scuffle either: “That’s the nature of competition. Bobby was loudly trashing BF3 at E3 (not ready on consoles, 30 frames/sec), so it’s arguable that ATVI ‘started it’ and it’s easier to take the high road when you’re in first place, so they are doing so now.”

Steinberg is in agreement. The industry has seen plenty of mudslinging over the years – it’s nothing new. “From a broader perspective, tasteful or no, the mudslinging means little from the perspective of semantics – subtelty’s never been an industry strong suit, as gaming rivals have been hurling insults since the days of ‘Genesis does what Nintendon’t.’ But what such smack-talk does do is galvanize attention around the coming showdown: A win-win for both sides from the perspective of pure publicity,” he continued.

“Whether or not that’s by design, or simply a natural outpouring of the enthusiasm and emotional investment each publisher has invested in the projects is largely irrelevant. Regardless of your appetite for name-calling, there’s no denying the clear upsides gained via such scuffles, as these heated exchanges help keep both games in the headlines, and top of mind.”
