Iranian fugitive: identity mix-up with shot Neda wrecked my life

Her face adorned a thousand placards and posters, an emblem of the failed Iranian uprising. The photograph of Neda Agha Soltan, who was shot dead on a Tehran street by a government sniper during the anti-regime demonstrations in 2009, was used in television broadcasts, web pages and newspapers all around the world. Unfortunately, it wasn’t her.

As 26-year-old Neda bled to death on the pavement, her shocked eyes stared into an onlooker’s mobile phone video camera and the terrible images were uploaded to international websites. It made her a martyr to those inside and outside Iran protesting at the flawed election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Scrambling to cover the story and looking to find a photograph of the dead woman in life, journalists who had been banned at the time from entering Iran lifted a photograph of a woman called Neda Soltani from her Facebook page and published it – and the life of the 32-year-old, middle-class university English lecturer changed for ever.

“It destroyed my life,” said Soltani, who has now written a book called My Stolen Face and still has to endure her image appearing as if she were the murdered Neda Soltan.

Soltan’s death galvanised the uprising as the Iranian authorities were desperately trying to contain it. Mosques were banned from praying for her and tear gas dispersed crowds of protesters who gathered around makeshift shrines. Her fiancé fled the country and her family were threatened.

For Soltani, the mix-up brought her to the attention of the Iranian secret service. “They wanted to use me to say the whole thing was a fake made up by western media – ‘see, here is this Neda and she is alive’. They didn’t care that it was nothing to do with me, that it was a mistake; they wanted me to co-operate and when I wouldn’t, they hounded me,” she said.

“I was interrogated three times and confronted with increasingly wild theories. They were threatening me and my brother and my mother. They charged me with treason. They said I was endangering the security of my own country. I knew what that meant: death.

“In a matter of 12 days, everything in my life had changed. From the day Neda was killed to the day I fled.

“My family were so shocked to see people everywhere carrying my photo, decorating it with black ribbons and flowers. Neda’s own family were in shock and it was some time before they released her real photo and by then it was too late; the world had mine.”

Luckily, Soltani had an exit visa in her passport, obtained for an academic conference she had been due to attend in Athens. Her friends bundled her out of the country just hours before the soldiers came for her. “I owe them my life because I was still so shocked, I didn’t really know what was happening.”

For nine months she lived in a refugee camp in Germany, a soulless, depressing existence. “Every day in such a place is torture, not just for me but for all those refugees. Some had been there for 10 years. You give up on your own destiny. You have to submit to whatever the system decrees. In my society I had achieved so much and now I had nothing – I was in a drawer, a folder labelled ‘refugee’.”

Finally she was granted leave to stay and is now, slowly, trying to adjust to the culture, learn the language and build herself another life in Munich.

“It’s hard. My friends have got married and had babies and I can never be there. My grandmother passed away, my brother graduated. Sometimes just the smallest thing, a smell, a certain moment, will bring back memories of home.

“I considered myself a good citizen, trying to play a positive part in society, but even a normal citizen can get into such trouble within a dictatorship.

“I am angry because it was amateurish and reckless. It shows how dangerous sloppy journalism can be. I had an apology a long time later from a news agency. It said: ‘We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.'”

My Stolen Face, by Neda Soltani, is available on amazon.com as a digital book.

How to Install Flash on Browsers on Android ICS.

As you might have already known, Adobe posted on their website that they won’t be making any update on Flash for the Android mobile device older than the 4.0 any longer because of HTML 5 which will support flash videos. Now that said, it really did piss a lot of users who already upgraded to the Ice Cream Sandwich OS released by Google in July. Now if you have a version of Android OS that is below 4.0, you can pretty much use Flash without any hustle. Although Flash Player is still available for download in GooglePlay, but it doesn’t mean that Adobe would update it. Android ICSThe current update on Flash player in GooglePlay Store is Flash Player 11, which off-course is the latest you can find on the Android device. For users who upgraded from a lower version to 4.0.4 OS (a.k.a Ice Cream Sandwich), you might notice at first that your browser would no longer be able to play flash video or any other flash plugin on websites you visit. Do not panic, there’s always a solution to every problem. All you need to do is simply go to Google Play Store and download Flash Player because in some case you might have not have noticed that your device was running without flash player installed. Another thing you might want to do is if you already have flash player 11 installed and yet your browser still doesn’t want to play that Flash, simple uninstall the Flash Player and Adobe Air and re-install those two Apps again, restart your Android device and now your browser should be able to detect that Flash.

True Blood

A Vampire's WorldWe have all seen Twilight and how one dumb girl just have a strong “affinity” for vampires, i won’t say its love because it’s just plain stupid. Anyway True Blood is a HBO series which has a nice twist to it. The Story talks about a young girl named Sookie Stackhouse, which unknown to her at first that she is half fairy and half human. which gave her like some awesome powers to play with by reading people’s thoughts. Now in this small Louisiana Town or Should i say in this United States of America, vampires have made themselves known to the world that they exist. which typically it’s a very bad idea because they would definitely still be sucking human blood. As the story goes, they made themselves public (VAMPIRES) by going through what they termed as “Main Streaming“, which basically means a member from the vampire community which is headed by a group of counselors who call themselves “The Authority” formed this idea to interact and be accepted by the human population so they can live together in harmony. Eventually things goes wrong in this very little town of Louisiana were Sookie who’s the half-fairy born lives. Unknown to the town that there are a lot of other supernaturals out there such as shape-shifters, were-wolf, vampire mainly and other creatures that are just plain wrong to happen nature and these creature would bring death and destruction to this little town. Sookie on her part, has a love for this vampire named Bill. Bill on the other hand is not your everyday vampire because he doesn’t believe in killing humans by sucking them dry. thus, was how he was recruited by “The Authority” and thus his love for Sookie grew as he got to know her and vice-versa. At the end of Season four, there’s a love triangle between Bill, Sookie and Eric(another vampire) and this whole thing of protecting one girl led to many deaths and disaster around Sookie and her town that it got to a point, her friends started disliking her because of her love for vampires. Eventually she tried to redeem herself and save the only two vampires that have ever loved her, but unknowing to her that Bill has been brain-washed by a religion so old that he couldn’t realized that he was changing into the thing he never wanted to be in the first place, A Killer Vampire.

Kill Zone 3

Kill Zone 3Now am not so much of a fan of Kill Zone but Playing the Third sequel on the PS3 got me somehow hooked to the Game. Although currently playing it, but overall it has a good graphics, the shooting style isn’t bad and the enemy AI is spot on. They can easily detect you and can shoot without stopping. Not so clear on the story but so far from what i have understood about the game, there’s a battle going on between probably a human race gone rogue and a race of human from Earth. This battle is to gain superiority in space travel and planetary conquest, If i could say it like that. In all, Kill Zone is a fast paced shooter which allow you to have lots of weapons to choose from and did i mention the graphics ain’t that bad. Also they have a similar version on the PS Vita which i have not seen but with words over the Internet, it seems to be the same graphics with that of the PS3; How epic is that. Anyway Kill Zone 3 is a nice game to play, still playing it and hope to learn more of the story-line by the time am done with the game.

Game of Thrones

A Medieval PeriodGame of Thrones just like your everyday series isn’t set on modern time instead its a medieval fantasy about seven noble families and their fight for power. In the series you get to know the lifestyle of so many families and how power can drag someone into something they are not.Political and sexual intrigue is pervasive. Robert Baratheon, King of Westeros, asks his old friend Eddard, Lord Stark, to serve as Hand of the King, or highest official. Secretly warned that the previous Hand was assassinated, Eddard accepts in order to investigate further. Meanwhile the Queen’s family, the Lannisters, may be hatching a plot to take power. Across the sea, the last members of the previous and deposed ruling family, the Targaryens, are also scheming to regain the throne. The friction between the houses Stark, Lannister and Baratheon, and with the remaining great houses Greyjoy, Tully, Arryn, and Tyrell, leads to full-scale war. All while a very ancient evil awakens in the farthest north. Amidst the war and political confusion, a neglected military order of misfits, the Night’s Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and icy horrors beyond. You get to watch battle scenes and the struggle for power how far one man or a group of men and women would go to achieve and how other would plot and deceive others just to save their own heads. it’s a nice series to watch currently in it’s 3rd Season, I think it’s something worth watching.
