Kojima wants to be more than “the Metal Gear guy”

Hideo Kojima hopes his legacy extends beyond Metal Gear

Metal Gear Solid: Ground ZeroIn an interview with EGM, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima said that he hopes his legacy extends beyond the franchise.

“I’ll admit that I hope my future endeavors are thought of as ‘works by Hideo Kojima’ rather than ‘from the creator of Metal Gear,” said Kojima. “I haven’t really shown the world what else I might be capable of yet. This may sound pretentious, but I don’t like being thought of as ‘the Metal Gear guy.’ There’s a lot more I can do.”

Despite that hope, Kojima said that there are benefits to working on the franchise he’s constantly tied to.

“I’ve always said that I want to work on original properties, but Metal Gear offers plenty of benefits. The Fox Engine, for example, took a lot of time and money [to create]; we were only able to develop it because it was intended for the next Metal Gear. In the next game, I’m introducing concepts intended for entirely new intellectual properties using the Metal Gear brand,” said Kojima.

The next Metal Gear is expected to be Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.

Sony sells 525,000 PS3s, 160,000 Vitas during Black Friday week in US

SCEA boss Jack Tretton very pleased with “incredible reception” for bundles

PlayStation ConsoleMicrosoft’s 750,000 units sold for the Xbox 360 was impressive, but Sony’s Black Friday week wasn’t too shabby either. The company announced today that more than 525,000 PS3 consoles were sold in the US during Black Friday week, while Sony also sold over 160,000 PS Vita units.

Sony noted that Black Friday bundle sales increased 15 percent while total PS3 sales including hardware, software and peripherals, grew 9 percent year-over-year. Sony cited the success of the Ultimate PlayStation Value Bundle, which included a 250GB PS3 and the Uncharted Dual Pack and inFAMOUS Collection for $199; it apparently “quickly sold out at retailers across the US.”

As for Vita, Sony said the Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation Bundle for $199 sold out at retail, “highlighted by Amazon selling through its specially priced inventory in less than five hours” and the Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified Bundle and Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes Bundles for $199 also ended up selling out at retail during the week.

“We’re very pleased with the Black Friday sales results, especially the incredible reception for the PS3 and PS Vita bundles. The demand was very strong which quickly depleted our inventory across retailers nationwide,” said Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America. “The PlayStation brand generated significant revenue and year-over-year growth at retail because of our focus on what gamers love most in combining amazing hardware with great games and digital entertainment.”

In addition to hardware sales, Sony commented on the growing PlayStation Plus service, which the company said saw subscriptions jump 259 percent compared to last year’s Black Friday period. Also, since the Instant Game Collection was introduced earlier this year, “customer satisfaction rates for PS Plus are above 95 percent,” Sony stated.

The PlayStation Mobile store will go live on October 3, offering 30 games to players in Japan, the US and Europe.

Prices have been confirmed for Japan as between ¥50 and ¥850 ($0.63 / £0.38 – $10 / £6.60), with a variety of titles in familiar action, puzzle, sports and simulation genres.

Hardware from Sharp and Fujitsu have also been added to the certified devices program, alongside HTC, Sony Ericsson, Asus and Wikipad.

PlayStation Mobile is Sony’s games offering for smartphone and tablet formats, running on the Android platform and previously known as PlayStation Suite.

In an interview earlier this year, Sony’s Jim Ryan told GamesIndustry International that over 50 different software houses were creating product for the service, which he saw as a gateway for users unfamiliar with Sony’s software catalogue.

The PlayStation Mobile SDK will be released to developers this November with a licensing agreement of $99 annually.
