Hunger Games dev: “We are changing the way Hollywood does business”

The business of licensed games is undergoing a fundamental shift thanks to the advent of social and mobile platforms, according to Funtactix CEO Sam Glassenberg, whose company is the developer behind The Hunger Games Adventures, the Facebook game based on The Hunger Games feature film.Funtactix

Evidence of the shift isn’t difficult to spot. When this generation started in 2005, seven of the top 10 grossing films in the US had gaming adaptations released at retail. For 2012, the numbers are reversed. Seven of the top 10 grossing films in the US have no retail gaming adaptation, including the top three films of the year: Marvel’s The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Hunger Games.

Making a Facebook game out of a film in which children fight to the death may seem like an unconventional choice, but Glassenberg told GamesIndustry International that projects like his are only going to become more common in the future.

“We are changing the way Hollywood does business,” Glassenberg said. “The lines are blurring. The old model was marketing would go and invest in cheesy advergames for the movie that nobody cared about, and licensing would run out and try to license some big console game. But now the walls between marketing and licensing are starting to fall.”

“[T]he walls between marketing and licensing are starting to fall.”

Sam Glassenberg

With console adaptations, Glassenberg said the challenge was finding the intersection of fans who owned the $300 system and were already big fans of the property, because nobody else was likely to shell out $60 for the game. But a lower barrier to entry for customers and the fact these games work on hardware people are likely to own anyway lets them kill a whole flock of birds with one stone, increasing awareness, drawing people to the theaters, raking in licensed goods revenue, and creating a community that can be turned to again when it’s time to promote the DVD release or a theatrical sequel.

“You’re creating something that’s a revenue-generating profitable product on its own, but at the same time, it’s the ultimate marketing tool,” Glassenberg said. “Because not only does it market the movie, it markets everything that comes after and keeps the audience engaged.”

The Hunger Games Adventures boasts more than 200,000 players, and is currently the fifth highest rated adventure game app on Facebook. The second film in the franchise, Catching Fire, is set for release November 22, 2013.

Capcom slashes profit estimates on weak Resident Evil 6 sales

Capcom has lowered sales and profit expectations for the year ending March 2013 due to weak sales of Resident Evil 6.
Resident Evil 6
The publisher has lowered sales estimates 11 per cent to JPY 93.5 billion ($1.1 billion) and net profits 33 per cent to JPY 6.5 billion ($77 million).

“Sales of the major new title Resident Evil 6 were initially strong but subsequently weakened. As a result, sales for this title are certain to fall short of the plan,” admitted the company.

Monster Hunter 4, initially due for release in March 2013, has now been put back to the next financial year.

“The decision has now been made to postpone the launch date based on the decision that further quality enhancements are needed in order to meet the expectations and wishes of users.” The 3DS title is now due in the summer.

Elena Fisher’s Growth in the Uncharted Series

I don’t know about every other person out there but for me, Uncharted 2 has got to be the best Uncharted series by far. The scenes, plot, storyline, game play etc everything about it was just epic. Compared to the Uncharted 3 which added more graphics and skills to each characters was so shabby if i may say so but Uncharted 2 still remains the best. I have all collections of the Uncharted series and right from the first Uncharted when Elena was introduced to Nathan as a reporter, i found her to be an Interesting character which she turned out to be.

Sully’s Journal About Elena Fisher

Unlike the first beginning when I knew Elena, she was shy, timid but had a positive vibe to changes around her which somehow gave her this instinctive feeling to explore more to find answers to her questions. Then later on, i began noticing her behavior towards finding the truth and when it comes to danger she quickly backs down. I find that interesting in a reporter because most reporter would like to chase a story even though it kills them but Elena was quite different, she valued people around her more than the story and if danger happens to break out, she’ll try to save others first before herself. Later on she lost the zeal completely for fact finding and I knew this was the time to let her go and not to endanger her life any more compared to when we first met, I saw a young vibrant and energetic woman filled with passion but i guess when you have witnessed so many deaths, you tend to be cautious. I think she has really grown to the woman i expected her to be, devoted and forward guided in achieving whatever she sets her standards to be. I can only write what i know of her and Hope Nathan doesn’t tag her along in his crazy thrills for adventure.

SKYFALL: 007

SkyfallOne of my greatest moment in this movie, is when 007 was on the train chase, i found this to be epic. Once again, you have Daniel Craig as the infamous MI6 agent code name: 007 on the hunt again for fascist terrorist and hoodlum secret organization bent on World domination. Out of all the previous James Bond movies acted by Daniel Craig, this has got to be my favorite so far. Despite anything or critics said on the Movie, this is the best 007 Movie made during the 21st century. The battle, realism, and drama involved makes it seem more life like than your conventional double 0 seven, who doesn’t seem to die in the line of fire and always escapes danger when threatened. Although, its a sad news than MOM , the “so called Director” of MI6 had to die in the Movie but this gave way for a more prominent role probably for future actors or actresses in the upcoming James Bond movie. In all, SKYFALL is the best James Bond movie out there as of now and I hope you like it as much as i did. And remember, don’t let the Sky fall on you.

Sony encouraged God of War screenwriters to make “dramatic shifts”

The writers of God of War don’t have to stick to the original story

God of War: AscensionIn an interview with Shock Till You Drop, God of War screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan said that Sony is allowing them to change things up on the film adaptation.

“[Sony], you think they’d be sacred about the origin story and all of that, but they were encouraging us to make it different from those [games] and if that means going in dramatic shifts, they were cool of it. And they’re involved,” said Melton.

The writing duo were also asked about how God of War will differentiate itself from other films based on Greek/Roman mythology, like Clash of the Titans and Immortals.

“Those movies can inform the God of War to step in a more bold direction,” said Dunstan. “Not to join those ranks, but to stand head and shoulders apart like other reinventions have done within that genre. The satisfying element is to look at those movies as a commentary on the genre and now say something different.”

Melton and Dunstan previously told IGN that the film would attempt to ground Kratos and make him more human.

“In the same way that Batman was grounded with Christopher Nolan’s rendition, we were attempting to do that with Kratos so that when we meet him, we’re seeing him before he became the Ghost of Sparta, when he was just a Spartan warrior and he had family and kids,” said Dunstan.

“We’re going to learn about him and understand how he operates. So it’s potentially 30 minutes — give or take — of building up this character so that, when he does turn and becomes the Ghost of Sparta, we understand him as a human and we understand the journey that he’s going to take. We’re emotionally invested, so that it could go beyond just this one movie,” Melton added.

God of war currently has no director or release window.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II first-year sales could be down 15%

Sterne Agee analyst observes noticeable decline in the blockbuster franchise

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2Call of Duty: Black Ops II had a massive launch, generating $500 million on its first day at retail, but retail channel checks point to a franchise that could be on the way down, if you ask Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia.

“We believe unit sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops II are tracking down double digits year-over-year. Our checks show initial sales of CoD: Black Ops II at some retailers were down as much as 20 percent. Subsequently, it appears sales of CoD did pick up a bit over the Thanksgiving holiday. We think the current sales curve suggests CoD: Black Ops II unit sales in its first year could ultimately be down 10 percent to 15 percent year-over-year,” he said.

“If we are right, this would be the second year in a row this critical franchise will have seen units decline (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is down an estimated 5 percent versus Call of Duty: Black Ops). We estimate CoD generates 40 percent to 45 percent of the company’s EBIT on an annual basis and it goes without saying that weakness in this franchise is a cause for concern.”

Bhatia noted that Microsoft’s Halo 4 launch and people anticipating big sales could have affected Call of Duty’s performance: “We think there are possibly three reasons for the weakness in Black Ops II: 1) We note that ratings for Black Ops II on average were slightly lower than Modern Warfare 3, which may have impacted initial sell-through; 2) Black Ops II launched only a week after Halo 4, which could have impacted its sales; and 3) Black Ops II launched only a week before Thanksgiving, which may have caused some consumers to delay purchases in anticipation of potential deals/discounts.”

While Call of Duty is still the king of shooters, Bhatia points out that next year is likely to see another highly-rated Battlefield game, and EA’s deal with Respawn may yield something fruitful in 2014, so Activision will be facing some stiff competition.
